Meet the artist

Hi, my name is Magdalena and I am the face behind Atelier du Peyron.

I am Polish but before settling down in France, I lived in England for 17 years.

I have always been creative. I attempted many different fields of arts & crafts and furniture restoration almost won. But the truth is, I have wanted to try pottery since 2015, when The Great Pottery Throw Down " aired for the first time in the UK. I was captivated and amazed to see how a ball of clay can be transformed by the hands of an experienced potter.

In 2020 I moved to France. We live in the gorgeous vallée du Valgaudemar, dans les Alpes françaises. Saint-Firmin is a tiny village with a population of only 450, surrounded by mountains. The majestic mountain in front of our house is called le Banc du Peyron (2777m), hence the name of my studio.

My business was officially created on the 1st of December 2023. So no, I don't have years of experience or ceramics schools under my belt. What I do have is the purest passion and love for pottery.

In 2024 I took part in a 9 month long training organised by Amy Palatnik (@amythepotter), which enabled me to improve my skills as a potter. During the course, I worked with 20 talented potters and learned not only from Amy, but also from them.

My work is inspired by the nature around me, but it's also guided by simplicity and functionality. I love the raw look of clay and bright colours. Each creation starts with a piece of clay and is shaped by my hands. The idea, the heat, the chemistry and a lot of time goes into the final product.

Encouraged by Sue McLeod, (@suemcleodceramics) guided by her wisdom and experience, I buy raw components and mix my own glazes. There is nothing more satisfying than opening the kiln and holding an object I have created from start to finish. I cherish every piece I hold in my hands, the most beautiful, the most surprising, but also the most unfortunate - I learn from them.

All this wouldn’t be possible without Nicolas, my husband, who not only is my biggest supporter but also my accountant, my IT guy, my chemist, my kiln technician, my business plan creator, the guy behind all the figures, and my shoulder to cry on when the "Kiln Gods" don't work in my favour. Atelier du Peyron is our creation.
